American Psychological Association

Doug Haldeman is actively involved in the American Psychological Association (APA), and has served in a number of positions in APA governance:

  • Currently serving on the APA Board of Directors
  • President of APA’s Division 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Issues)
  • Member-at-Large of the Executive Boards of Divisions 42 (Independent Practice) and 51 (Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity).
  • Representative of Division 44 on APA’s Council of Representatives, the Association’s legislative body.
  • Chair and Treasurer of APA Council’s Public Interest Caucus,
  • President of the Association of Practicing Psychologists (APP).

Committee memberships have included:

  • Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (1994-1996)
  • Ethics Committee (2000-2002)
  • Committee on Structure and Function of Council (2003-2006)

Doug Haldeman is a Fellow of APA’s Divisions 44, 42, 31(State, Provincial and Territorial Affairs) and 29 (Psychotherapy), and is a member of Divisions 51, 17 (Counseling) and 45 (Society for the Study of Ethnic Minority Issues).

Doug has also co-authored a number of APA’s policies related to sexual orientation, including:

  • The Resolution on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation (1997)
  • The Guidelines for Psychotherapy with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Clients (2000)
  • The Resolutions on Marriage and Sexual Orientation (2004)
  • Sexual Orientation and Parenting (2004)

Doug Haldeman currently serves on APA President Ron Levant’s Task Force on Diversity in Psychology for 2005, and has been awarded an APA Presidential Citation for his work in diversity.

Washington State Psychological Association

Doug Haldeman has been a member of the Washington State Psychological Association (WSPA) since 1984, and has been active in a number of the Association’s committees. He is presently serving on the WSPA Executive Council as Member-at-Large (2003-2006).

  • Chair of the Government and Legal Affairs Committee, tracking legislation in Olympia relevant to the mental health needs of the citizens of Washington State (1998-2001)
  • Co-chair of WSPA’s Committee on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns (1988-1992)
  • Program Committee member (1991)

University of Washington

For twenty years, Doug has been affiliated with the University of Washington’s Psychology Department as a clinical faculty member, supervising students, interns and conducting trainings on lesbian, gay and bisexual issues.
